Our calculators are built around how materials are actually sold: concrete by the 40, 60 or 80 lb bag or by the cubic yard, gravel and asphalt by the ton, mulch by the 2 or 3 cubic foot bag, sod by the pallet and decking by the board.

Every calculator page shows the formula it uses, a worked example you can check by hand, and the reference data behind it — such as manufacturer bag yields and extension-service recommendations for mulch depth. Read how we calculate for the details.

Quantities are estimates. Density and bag yields vary between suppliers, so for large orders confirm the numbers with the company you buy from, and follow your local building code for anything structural.
